Yine Indians Manu Information

Please consider to spend a few days with the Yine indians of Manu as part of your Peru travel experience. First let us explain the Yine project to you:

Manu is well-known as one of the last undisturbed tropical rainforests left on Earth. Here, animals at the verge of extinction can still be found in healthy populations. Little was known, however, about its original human inhabitants. Until recently that is, when the Yine Indians of the Alto Madre de Dios River called attention to their plight: park restrictions do not allow them to use as big a hunting territory as their increasing population requires.

The consequences of logging and over-hunting, currently the only options left for income and self maintenance, are becoming visible: deforestation, a high malnutrition rate, alcohol abuse and loss of cultural identity within the adolescent society.

Rightly, the Yine have claimed now their stake in eco-tourism. They look to find a new lifestyle allowing their culture and surrounding ecosystem to remain intact, and so to continue on into the future as Yine People.

Today, the Yine are involved in the Yine Project, incorporating the Yine Lodge, the Yine Restaurant and a complete 3-day Yine Tour Program.

The aims of the Yine Project are:

  1. training the Yine Community in general to a better understanding of eco-tourism and its advantages for their future.
  2. training individual Yine Indians for lodge & restaurant, guide & sales, and management & administrative functions
  3. to conserve the Yine Culture by recording as much of their oral history, stories, ecological knowledge, music, arts, handicrafts as possible
  4. involve as many members of the Yine tribe as possible in the project, through related programs, such as a repair-shop for outboard motors, the production of handicrafts for the international market and non-destructive land use programs, for example traditional agriculture and breeding of local animals directed at the needs of the restaurant and utilization of community lands for biological investigations by international researchers in co-operation with community members.

If you want to have a special Peru travel experience then we strongly recommend to visit the Yine community. They will share their expertise with regard to the rainforest, medicine and wildlife with you. Meeting the Yine people will create a life lasting remembrance.
